50 wines to try before you die! - Our Thirty Sixth wine - Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils 2013

Friday 4th November 2016

see The 2013 Lignier Gevrey has a deep colour, with an intense nose, of blackcurrant and small red and black fruits. When ageing, we get some animal and musky aromas. Powerful and rich in the mouth, reflecting the high average age of the vines, it presents a delicious equilibrium with balanced fruit, acidity and tannins. A wonderfully expressive wine.

50 wines to try before you die! - Our Thirty Fifth wine - Gewurztraminer Classic, Hugel 2013

Tuesday 25th October 2016 The 2013 vintage is superb giving a fine, well-balanced wine with great depth. This is a highly perfumed wine, with tropical fruit and lychee overtones plus cardamon spice, saffron and liquorice. Perfect as an aperitif, with lobster, Chinese or spicy food or with pork, pheasant or partridge. One of our all time favourite nemeses.

Friday 14th October 2016

watch Complex nose of sweet blackberries, red plums, roasted provençal herbs and macerated cherries. This appellation lies only 15km from the world renowned vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape and is a powerful alternative at two thirds of the price.

50 wines to try before you die! - Our Thirty Third wine - Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz, Dandelion, Barossa 2014

Thursday 6th October 2016 On the nose there is spice and pepper, bramble and hints of chocolate. Rich in the mouth, initially there are raspberries, blackberries and plummy hoisin-like spice. A long wine, with firm tannins and dark chocolate overtones. The deserved winner of many awards, this wine is a serious contender comparable to many of the big Barossa names but at a fraction of the price. Definitely one to enjoy as the evenings start to lengthen.

50 wines to try before you die! - Our Thirty Second wine - Carmenere Reserva, Falernia, Elqui Valley, Chile 2014

Tuesday 20th September 2016

watch Carmenere is actually an historic Bordeaux varietal and is often mistaken for Merlot. In terms of vinification, the grapes are dried and hand-picked - a technique that gives Amarone such depth - it helps that one of the winemakers hails from the Veneto region of Italy. Deep in colour, with green pepper, chocolate and vanilla notes on the nose. Rich with ripe tannins and spicy aroma on the palate. Works well with spicy foods. A one-off and a New World gem.
